As Anne enters high school, a fourteen-year-old, African-American boy is killed for spill the beans at a white woman. Anne realizes that she has overlooked the racial problems and force unit that surround her. She now fears being killed just because I was black. afterwards the murder, Anne overhears Mrs. murder and her guild meeting discuss the NAACP, and she finds verboten from her teacher that this organization is trying to improve the situation for grey African Americans. The tensions between the white and black communities of Centreville escalate, resulting in the debacle of one of Annes classmates and the deliberate setting of a fire that kills intimately an entire family.
