As Anne enters high school, a fourteen-year-old, African-American boy is killed for spill the beans at a white woman. The tensions between the white and black communities of Centreville escalate, resulting in the debacle of one of Annes classmates and the deliberate setting of a fire that kills intimately an entire family.
